I love the idea of giving family and friends something special to celebrate the the 250th birthday for the United States of America, so I crafted some interactive folio cards to commemorate this important milestone. They incorporate a lot of texture and maximize using a bunch of the red, white & blue paper embellishments in the pattern paper packs we all love. These examples use “All American” by Echo Park Paper Co. The final size is 7 x 5 inches and can fit in a standard A7 envelope.
Begin with a red, white & blue double-sided cardstock 7 in x 12 in. Score at 2 inches and 7 inches. If your pattern paper is directional, be sure to orient your paper so the cover and the pocket have the design the upside-up. Turn the paper vertically with the print you want on the cover of your folio on the back and the 2 inch score on the bottom. If you like vintage look, you can ink the edges at this stage.

Fold up the 2 inch flap and add a thin line of glue along each side to create a pocket. Fold down the top flap to finish the folio 7 x 5 inch shape.

To add interest, cut about 1/2 inch off the top flap with decorative scissors, or cut straight and add some lace or ribbon.

Then add a little hook & loop circle in the center of the pocket, near the top edge. I found my sticker ones at Dollar Tree of course! To make it align properly, stick both sides together on the pocket, close the flap to stick the top circle to the flap exactly in the correct spot. Now you have the folio ready to decorate!

Select a few cut-aparts in your patterned paper kit and add touches of texture with staples, ribbon, paper tabs, gems, paper clips, washi tape and lace. For the collage on the front, pop up the centerpiece with some foam squares to create some dimension. For the final layer, add celebration stickers for a splash of more color.

Here’s what the inside looks like with all the added embellishments. After pulling open the hook & loop closure, the recipient can interact with the folio by pulling out each embellished card to read and see more of the designs.

For a vintage touch, include some kraft paper accents and ink the edges – try navy blue instead of brown for a special touch.

Add some lace to the flap edge for more dimension, and paper clip even more embellishments to the edge of the pocket inside.

For a variation, glue two pieces of your patterned paper together to make a horizontal trifold folio. This sample has a shorter front flap with the cut-apart on top to add more length.

I just love how these patriotic folios turned out, and I can’t wait to mail them to family and friends to commemorate our country’s birthday celebration! Happy 4th of July!
