Christmas Linen Table Runner Tutorial

I found this beautiful fabric last year and couldn’t resist buying a couple yards for my stash. It’s unusual, because it can be fringed like linen, but it’s 100% polyester and doesn’t wrinkle at all!

I love the metallic gold accents, and how the print is in long rows along the length of the fabric. It was saying, “Make me into a table runner!”

This tutorial creates a 14 x 72 inch runner, but can be modified for your table size.

Supplies:
2 yards Holiday Pinecone with Glitter Linen fabric (from Jo-Ann Fabrics)
2 yards Red Sew Classic Linen Look Fabric
Tan and red threads

(Note: This fabric amount makes up to 4 runners, but 2 yards are needed since the pattern runs the length vs. the width of the fabric.)

1. Cut fabrics to size along the length of the fabric

Tips for Success: Be careful to cut the fabric straight with the grain as close as possible. This will make the fringing easier later.

I cut my top fabric to include 5 rows of pinecones, but you can choose the width you would like to fit your table. Cut the red bottom fabric exactly the same size as the top. (I pinned my top fabric to the bottom wrong sides together, then cut it with a rotary cutter.

2. Fold the two ends of the top fabric under 1/2 inch.

3. Thread your sewing machine
Use tan thread on the top and red thread in the bobbin so the stitches will “disappear” after fringing.

4. Sew around the entire runner with a 1/2 inch seam allowance
Sew along the edge of the folded top fabric at the ends.

5. Fringe fabric
This will take a little patience, but it will make a beautiful edge!

Using a straight pin, pull each thread out along each edge of fabric, one at a time.

As you get close to the stitches, some threads may stop in the middle of the edge because the grain is not exactly straight. Pull gently until it stops, then cut to the same length as the fringe to hide inside the fringe.

Enjoy this glittery table runner on your Christmas dining room table!

Bonus: Make fringe ribbon with the narrow strips leftover from the runners. Sew around the edge of the fabric with a 1/2 inch seam allowance and fringe – fun!
