Crafting Directions for the Succulent:

Using my free downloadable template SucculentBookmarkTemplate, cut out 5 extra small leaves and 3 super small leaves from bright green felt, one light pink heart, and one brown pot and rim.

To add some depth to the leaves, paint the ends with a little watered down craft paint. I blended green, then peacock blue in a “U” shape around the ends, and a dab of bright pink at the tips. To add some patina to the pot and heart, dry brush some metallic gold horizontally across the pot and rim pieces, and dab bright pink to create a shadow look on the heart.

To start creating the plant, turn one of the extra small leaves sideways and loosely roll into a spiral. Add a little dab of hot glue.

Then add one leaf at a time around the spiral with a little dab of hot glue at the base. Place 4 extra small leaves along the back and 3 super small leaves along the front, like flower petals, staggering the tips.

Sewing Directions for the Bookmark:

Fuse the interfacing to the top fabric (optional) and pin on the batting, centering on the fabric. Quilt as desired leaving space for the pot at the top – I tried some free motion flowers, but wavy vertical lines would look pretty too.

Place the pot, rim and heart at the top of the bookmark, leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance at the top and centered left to right.

Using a small blanket stitch on your sewing machine, carefully sew around the edges, pivoting when the needle is at the edge, not when it’s stitching into the middle of the fabric.

Add the bottom fabric and sew around the edge with a 1/4 inch seam allowance and leaving the top open.

Turn right sides out, poking out the corners, and iron flat.

Insert the felt succulent and carefully hand sew into place using an invisible stitch.

With the batting and interfacing, the bookmark isn’t flimsy and stays flat when holding it.

Now all you need is to find mom a new book, add your new crafty succulent bookmark and voila – Happy Mother’s Day!
