Papercrafting Technique – Machine Sewing

I love using unique techniques for my handmade cards, and one of my favorite embellishments is, of course, sewing! The stitches add texture and give the cards a special detail. I like using it in different ways – to frame a picture or words or to draw a shape. You can stitch little pockets and even sew on ribbon and fabric embellishments.

To sew on paper, it is easiest to match the top thread with the bobbin thread and test your stitches on a scrap paper to adjust the tension. Also lengthen the stitch, because using small stitches will perforate the paper apart. And when returning to sewing on fabric, be sure to change the needle because sewing on paper dulls the point.

To affix the ends of the thread, I like to start and end the stitches at the same point and leave the ends of the thread long. Then I tie the top threads and bobbin threads into little knots or bows. And to secure, I dab a tiny dab of Elmer’s glue on the knot.

With my handmade paper, I use an insert of stationery paper for writing, and it also covers the stitches on the back of the card paper. Another way to hide the stitches is to make the card using a whole letter size paper and fold it into fourths. Open the paper for stitching and then fold back together into a card.

I hope you will try sewing on paper and make some crafty cards for yourself. Happy sewing!
